Birthday at Bok Tower

For my birthday, I took my parents to see Bok Tower Gardens in Lake Wales, FL. The Bok Tower and gardens are the result of Edward W. Bok’s dream to create a sanctuary at the top of one of the highest hills in Central Florida. He would spend the winter months on a property near the “mountain” and enjoyed his evening constitutionals up what was then “Iron Mountain.” The gardens were designed by Federick Law Olmsted Jr.

The Bok tower was inspired from the memories of the carillons of the Netherlands. Milton B. Medary was commissioned to design the singing tower. He drew his inspiration from the churches of Europe. Lee Lawrie was brought on to design the marble sculpture that adorns the tower.  The carillons are played every half hour featuring hymns.

Besides the garden and tower, there are trails, a gift shop, and a restaurant to visit as well. I’d like to go back for Sunset & Symphony on November 5th.

Curious Squirrel

My parents have been visiting for the last week. I have enjoyed playing tour guide and showing them some of the sights around central Florida. One of our stops included Bok Tower where I snapped a shot of this squirrel. I’ll share a bit more about their visit this week.
